Holy Light flown to Greek cities for Resurrection services Saturday night

The Holy Light arrived at the Athens International Airport at 19:30 on Holy Saturday, shortly after leaving Jerusalem. It was transferred to the Holy Sepulchre monastery dependency in Plaka, welcomed by pilgrims. It was then scheduled to be flown to 18 Greek cities for the Resurrection services on Saturday night by the Aegean, Olympic Air, and Sky Express Airlines.

The Holy Light was brought to Greece by a delegation led by Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister Yiannis Loverdos, who attended the ceremony of the lighting at the Church of the Resurrection in Jerusalem earlier on Holy Saturday.

The minister received the Holy Light from Patriarch Theophilos III of Jerusalem, who expressed the hope that the light of the Resurrection “shines in the hearts of this century’s leaders so that humanity may experience peace, reconciliation, and concord.”

Loverdos responded that it is very important for every Greek government that has this unique privilege to be at the Holy Sepulcre and receive the Holy Light from the hands of the patriarch, the custodian.

The minister headed a delegation including among others New Democracy Deputy Maximos Charakopoulos as representative of the Greek Parliament and of the Interparliamentary Assembly on Orthodoxy; Metropolitan David of Grevena, in northern Greece; and Exarch of the Holy Sepulcher, Archimandrite Hieronymus, who was holding the special lantern with the Holy Light.
