Defence Min Dendias at IDU: Authoritarian threats demand strength and courage not appeasement
Washington, DC.- Minister of National Defence Nikos Dendias participated in the International Democracy Union (IDU) Forum in Washington, DC, in the discussion “The Future of Governance: international security in an age of nationalism.”
In a post on X, Dendias said that former Croatian President Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic and former Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison also participated.
The discussion was moderated by International Republican Institute President Dr. Dan Twining.
The IDU, in a post on its official X account, said that the first panel in which Mr. Dendias participated focused on international security issues. The speakers emphasized strength and courage over appeasement in addressing authoritarian threats – no matter where in the world they arise.
Dendias stressed that we cannot afford to be in the geographical position of Luxembourg and be safe everywhere, noting that we must agree to any kind of appeasement.
“What we all have to agree on is to support the rules-based international order. Not to accept change by force. Not to accept terrorism as a way of changing the world,” Dendias argued.
Dendias also stressed that Greece spends on defence 3% to 3.5% of GDP.
“We do this not only because we are a reliable ally in NATO but also because we face a threat from our neighbor, Turkey,” he pointed out.
