Mitsotakis at MED9 summit: Greece will always support Cyprus in efforts to resolve the Cyprus issue

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, in his statements following the conclusion of the MED9 Summit in Paphos, emphasized that Greece will always stand by Cyprus in efforts to resolve the Cyprus issue.

He expressed his pleasure at the participation of the King of Jordan in the summit, noting that Jordan plays a vital role as a stabilizing force in the broader Middle East region.

Regarding the crisis in the Middle East, Mitsotakis highlighted that it is unfortunately escalating and affecting the people of Lebanon.
“I want to add my voice to the call for an immediate ceasefire in both Lebanon and Gaza, where the humanitarian disaster has reached nightmarish proportions. Greece was among the first to condemn Iran’s attacks on Israel, as they contribute to the dangerous escalation of tensions and increase the risks to regional stability,” Mitsotakis said.
He further noted that the summit included detailed discussions on European competitiveness and migration. “ We also recognized that all Mediterranean countries are unfortunately on the front lines of the climate crisis, making our coordination in addressing these phenomena even more imperative,” Mitsotakis stated.

Underlined also that regional developments were thoroughly reviewed during the meeting. On the Cyprus issue, he welcomed the informal trilateral meeting under the United Nations Secretary-General and expressed hope that it would lead to the resumption of negotiations aimed at a solution based on Security Council resolutions, international law, and the EU acquis.

Addressing the President of the Republic of Cyprus Nikos Christodoulides, Mitsotakis stressed, “ Greece will always be a supporter of your efforts and finally, 50 years after the Turkish invasion, we hope to achieve this much-desired solution.”
