FM Gerapetritis: Opportunity for ensuring long-lasting peace in our region

Athens.-  Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis notes that Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan will outline a new roadmap for the Greece-Turkey dialogue during their visit to New York, ahead of the Supreme Cooperation Council meeting later this year.

In an interview with newspaper “ Ta Nea”, Gerapetritis emphasizes that, despite significant disagreements, maintaining open communication channels shows both parties’ commitment to stability and calm in the region.

He adds that Greece is approaching the dialogue on the delineation of the continental shelf and EEZ-with the only issue eligible for international jurisdiction-with confidence from its strengthened diplomatic position.

“In this context,” Gerapetritis said, “I believe there is indeed a window of opportunity to ensure long-lasting peace in our region.”
Gerapetritis also highlights that conditions are favorable for the two Foreign Ministers to explore a mutually acceptable solution, although the final decision will rest with the leaders of both countries.

Regarding the Cyprus issue, he mentions that after a long period of inactivity and following intense diplomatic efforts by the Greek government and the Republic of Cyprus, the matter has returned to the UN’s agenda.

On the North Macedonia Prespa Agreement violations, Gerapetritis asserts that the Agreement, as an international text, takes precedence over national laws and cannot be unilaterally amended. “If the core of the Agreement continues to be violated, there are safeguards that our country is well aware of. Selective application of international law comes with a price,” he added.
