PM Mitsotakis highlights progress of national infrastructure projects during visit to Lefkada

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis expressed his satisfaction that national-scale infrastructure projects “have moved from the study and planning phase to the implementation and delivery phase” with the aim of improving the lives of Greeks, during his visit to Lefkada on Friday.

Mitsotakis attended the signing of the contract for the construction of a new water supply network for the regional units of Lefkada, Preveza, and Arta. He emphasized that the project, which will commence construction immediately, is one of the largest new water supply projects in Greece. He also highlighted that it links three regional units by transporting water sourced from the springs of Agios Georgios to Lefkada island.

“I am absolutely certain, ladies and gentlemen, that this project will be completed even faster than the timetable. I think the minister said it well, and the fact that many TERNA officials are from Lefkada will also help in its own way, so that we can achieve the goal of delivering this project within this four-year term of New Democracy. And I am confident that this goal will be achieved,” he said.

Earlier, Mitsotakis visited the projects on the road network connecting Aktion with Lefkada and toured the center of Lefkada, where he spoke with citizens, tourists, businessmen and workers in the catering and tourism sectors. Subsequently, he participated in meetings with representatives of local authorities and regional bodies.

Gov’t sources

The network of water pipes, reservoirs and pumping stations is 104 km long, and has been designed to cover the maximum daily needs during the summer period, when the population in the area rises sharply, government sources said.

It will reduce loss of water that is overall assessed at 30%, and the water’s rationalized distribution will prevent the excessive pumping of water from drilling of wells. The project is expected to be completed in 2027, they added.

Staikouras

The new water supply network in western Greece will serve over 150,000 residents, Infrastructure & Transport Minister Christos Staikouras said on Lefkada island on Friday, during the signing of the project in western Greece.

Staikouras said the project was one of the interventions directed by Mitsotakis which foresaw the coverage of household water needs in 3 Regions, 3 regional units, 6 municipalities, and 27 settlements.

The agreement, he underlined, is “yet another emblematic initiative in the field of best-practices management and rationalized utilization of water resources,” and particularly important because of the rapid change in climate and the constantly rising needs following exponential urban growth, particularly in popular tourist destinations.

Besides Mitsotakis, the event was attended by Deputy Infrastructure & Transport Minister responsible for infrastructure Nikos Tachiaos, party deputies, and local government representatives.

Speaking about the project, Tachiaos said the new network will replace the current and outdated water supply network, cover water needs for the next 40 years in the regions mentioned, and reduce water loss.
