FinMin Hatzidakis advocates green transition and Recovery Fund II to support green policies

Athens, Greece.- Minister of National Economy and Finance Kostis Hatzidakis speaking on Thursday at the annual Brussels Economic Forum organized by the European Commission, expressed support for the Green Deal and Green Transition. However, he emphasized the need for corresponding financial support. “ And I see no better way of supporting public policies than continuing after 2026 with a new funding package, the Recovery Fund, which emphasizes precisely these policies,” Hatzidakis said.

Hatzidakis participated in the panel titled “ The Green Transition: Fair Policies for People and Climate.” In his speech, he stressed that efforts should continue toward the climate targets set within the framework of the Paris Agreement while ensuring that the necessary adjustments are made to the transition rate in certain sectors, such as agriculture, so as not to negatively affect farmers’ incomes. He also stressed the need to implement international agreements.

At the same time, he referred to Greece’s significant progress noting in particular the 80% reduction in coal use in electricity generation, the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by 43% compared to 2005 and the increase in the share of renewable sources. He stressed that Greece is ranked 7th worldwide based on the percentage of electricity generated by solar and wind and 5th in terms of capacity per capita.
