SYRIZA, PASOK-KINAL call on opposition parties to join forces over surveillance issue

SYRIZA-Progressive Alliance called on all opposition parties to “assume joint initiatives on parliamentary control and the full inquiry and clarification of the cellphone interception scandal” in Parliament on Wednesday.

The main opposition’s parliamentary group president Sokratis Famellos expressed great concern over “interference by the government” in investigations. In particular, he said that justice must resolve the two outstanding investigations and provide answers, and parties must be informed of the results.

“I propose that the rest of the parties also assume initiatives for parliamentary control over this issue,” he said. “We trust no media report. We want to trust justice but we must all do this united, and prove this as well. On issues of transparency and democracy, we will be a lot more demanding and much faster so, because anything the government plans – whether for independent authorities or for the rule of law – Syriza will be here and is here, to ensure nothing remans in the dark,” Famellos said.

Also addressing Parliament, PASOK-Movement for Change (KINAL) parliamentary group president Dimitris Mantzos invited Syriza to join the socialist party instead. Referring to Pasok-Kinal leader Nikos Androulakis, whose surveillance by the National Intelligence Service (EYP) opened the issue, Mantzos told Famellos “you are knocking on open doors.” Androulakis promoted initiatives in Greece and the European Union, he added, because the issue is not a personal one, but one of democracy and rule of law.

Speaking to Syriza, the Pasok representative also expressed concern over the progress of the investigations, particularly after the intervention of the Supreme Court, and said, “You know us, you know what we have done, what we have said, what we have supported. You come join your forces with those who have been fighting in the light for a year and three months now.”
