Migration Min.: Greece working with European Commission on update of 2016 EU-Turkiye agreement

Greece is in continuous coordination with the European Commission in terms of the updating of the EU-Turkey Declaration of 2016, Greek Migration and Asylum Dimitris Kairidis said after a meeting with EU Commissioner for Home Affairs Ylva Johansson.

Kairidis was in Brussels to attend the EU Council of Home Affairs. He said that the European Commission stood by Greece and was prepared to provide emergency aid from the European Fund of urgent needs. It was also prepared to activate processes to provide more staff from European agencies like the European Union Agency for Asylum and Frontex to better manage the situation of migration flows.

“We want Turkiye to guard its borders better, to fight the human trafficker networks, and to accept returns as foreseen,” he said, by applying the 2016 agreement.
