Mt. Parnitha wildfire conditions substantially improved, says Fire Brigade
Wildfire conditions at Mt. Parnitha, north of Athens, present a substantial impovement, the Fire Brigade announced on Thursday night.
Fire first broke out on Tuesday morning in the area of Fili, west of Athens, on Parnitha’s foothills, threatening the mountain’s national forest region.
However, wildfires have rekindled at Iliki, in Boeotia’s Zaltsa area near the Hosios Loukas world heritage monastery – of which one building was burnt on Wednesday – and also at the villages of Stiri and Kyriaki at Distomo, also in Boeotia (Viotia). The Boeotia fires first broke out on Wednesday at Stiri.
Firefighting operations continue on the ground at Boeotia, comprising – apart from the Hellenic Fire Brigade and Hellenic Police – firefighting forces provided by the European Civil Protection, Armed Forces personnel, municipal water tanks and many volunteers.
