Firefighters continue to battle wildfires on Rhodes, Corfu, Karystos and Dervanaki -Dead Pilot, co-pilot of Canadair

Firefighters assisted by the Civil Protection forces and volunteers were fighting the flames yet another night on Rhodes, Corfu, Karystos and Dervanaki.
The situation remains difficult in Rhodes, with all the Civil Protection forces, together with volunteers and residents, making unrelenting efforts, under adverse conditions, to prevent the fire from spreading. The active fronts, according to the Fire Service, are located in the southern and southeastern part, i.e. they are focused on the area of Malona, Vati and the area of Gennadi. With the first light of the day, 2 aircraft and 2 helicopters started dropping water.
In Corfu there was rekindling over the night with the fronts of the fire located in the north-eastern part of the island. Two aircraft and two helicopters are assisting the efforts of the firefighters.
In Karystos, the picture of the fire is better with firemen fighting scattered outbreaks.
Regarding the fire in Dervenaki, Achaia, according to the Fire Department, firefighters assisted by a helicopter were fighting the rekindling that occurred during the night mainly in the Niamata area.

Pilot, co-pilot of Canadair that crashed during Evia firefighting are dead

The pilot and co-pilot of a Canadair CL-215 that crashed while fighting a fire in Platanisto, southern Evia, are dead, a statement by the Hellenic Air Force General Staff said on Tuesday.

Flight Lt. Christos Moulas, 34, and Second Lt. Periklis Stefanidis, 27, were on board the water-dousing aircraft which belonged to the 355 Tactical Transport Squadron, part of the 112 Combat Wing at Elefsina Air Base.

The airplane crashed at 14:52, according to the press release.

Greece’s Armed Forces have declared a three-day mourning period (July 25-27) for the loss of lives of two Air Force officers while executing their duty, by order of National Defense Minister Nikos Dendias.

Dendias exressed his condolences to the families and colleagues.
