Mitsotakis after majority of vote count: Rolling up our sleeves to implement reforms faster

Greece is facing a new historic chapter, and New Democracy has been given a strong mandate to proceed with major reforms faster, party leader Kyriakos Mitsotakis said on Sunday evening, with the majority of votes counted in the second round of national elections (nearly 90%).

Shortly after 9:00 pm, Mitsotakis said, “For the second time in a few weeks citizens sent a message of continuity in the path we set ou four years ago, and they also gave us a strong mandate to move faster on the path of great changes that our country needs.”

He added that the electoral result, voters “loudly and maturely put an end to a traumatic cycle of lies and toxicity that held back the country and divided society, establishing the era of real progress.”

Mitsotakis said that he “never promise(s) miracles,” but that he would “remain faithful to my national duty with a plan, devotion, and mainly with hard work, having no tolerance for conceit or arrogant behavior.” He vowed that he would fight any stance in the party that would scorn the public’s trust.

The New Democracy leader spoke of “high goals” in a second term that can tranform Greece with development, higher wages, and fewer inequalities, along with better public and free health, a more effective and digital state, and a strong homeland in the frontline of Europe. “We have both the plan and the experienc to put these into action,” he underlined.

“I am aware that expectations are great, and that is why I will always seek greater agreements. But the Greek people gave us a clear majority, therefore the great reforms will go ahead quickly, as this is what the choice of the Greek people demands, and I will honor this fully,” Mitsotakis said.

“Today we will briefly enjoy our victory, but as of tomorrow we are rolling our sleeves up again and getting to work to build together a stronger Greece, a homeland with greater prosperity and more justice for all,” Mitsotakis said, wrapping up his brief message at party headquarters.

With 88% of the votes counted, New Democracy will form a stand-alone government for a second term with 158 seats in a 300-seat Parliament and 40.51% of the votes, followed by SYRIZA with 47 (17.84%) and PASOK-KINAL with 32 seats (11.97%).
