Ισχυρός σεισμός εντάσεως 7,4 Ρίχτερ σημειώθηκε στις 04:44 στην Παπούα Νέα Γουινέα. Σύμφωνα με το Ευρωμεσογειακό Σεισμολογικό Ινστιτούτο το εστιακό βάθος ήταν 30 χιλιόμετρα.

Οι αρχές εξέδωσαν προειδοποίηση για τσουνάμι σε ακτίνα 300 χιλιομέτρων από το επίκεντρο του σεισμού.

Η Σούζαν Μακγκρέιντ, ιδιοκτήτρια ενός ξενοδοχείου της Ραμπάουλ, δήλωσε στο πρακτορείο ειδήσεων Ρόιτερς ότι ο σεισμός έγινε ιδιαίτερα αισθητός στην πόλη, αλλά πρόσθεσε ότι δεν υπάρχουν μέχρι στιγμής πληροφορίες για θύματα ή σοβαρές υλικές ζημιές, αναφέρει το ΑΠΕ-ΜΠΕ.

A strong 7.5 magnitude earthquake has struck the southern coast of Papua New Guinea, US Geological Survey reports.

The quake set off a tsunami warning for areas within a 300 kilometer radius of the epicenter, which includes Indonesia and Australian coast.

A large temblor registered 133 kilometers (83 miles) south-west of Kokopo, according to USGS.

The revised data showed the epicenter to be 63 kilometers under the coast of New Britain island.

The USGS measured the earthquake depth at 50km.

The quake was followed by a 5.9-magnitude aftershock just 10 minutes later.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center has issued a preliminary warning message immediately after the first tremor.

“An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 7.5 occurred in the New Britain region, Papua New Guinea at 01.44UTC [11.44am local time] on Tuesday 25 May 2015.

Based on the preliminary earthquake parameters … hazardous tsunami waves are possible for the coasts located within 300km of the earthquake epicentre.

Tsunami waves reaching 0.3 to 1 metres above the tide level are possible for some coasts of Papua New Guinea.”

Islands in Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Indonesia, Vanuatu, Fiji, Indonesia, the Philippines and surrounding nations are expected to be hit by the waves.

According to the weather bureau’s last statement, a tsunami threat is highly unlikely to reach Australia.

The Joint Australian Tsunami Warning Centre also confirmed there is no tsunami threat to the Australian mainland, islands or territories.
