ΕΝΗΜΕΡΩΤΙΚΟ ΔΕΛΤΙΟ

Δύο συναυλίες βυζαντινής μεσαιωνικής μουσικής βασισμένης σε χειρόγραφους μουσικούς κώδικες της Ιεράς Μονής Αγίας Αικατερίνης Σινά (13ος – 15ος αι.) και ένα Master class μουσικής θα πραγματοποιήσει το 10μελές ανδρικό φωνητικό μουσικό σύνολο Cappella Romana, το οποίο έρχεται στην Πάτρα (19/5) και την Αθήνα (20/5) από το Seattle της βορειοδυτικής Αμερικής.

Το μουσικό σύνολο έχει ήδη ερμηνεύσει το ρεπερτόριο αυτό στο Smithsonian Institution (Washington, DC), στο J. Paul Getty Museum (LA), και στο Metropolitan Museum of Art (NY), ενώ πριν έρθει στη χώρα μας θα δώσει συναυλίες στο Λονδίνο (The Hellenic Center & Saint Bartholomew the Great – 14 & 15 Μαΐου) και στο Regensburg της Γερμανίας (17 Μαΐου).

Kαλλιτεχνικός διευθυντής τών Cappella Romana είναι ο Αλέξανδρος Λίγκας, ο οποίος εργάζεται ως Senior Lecturer in Music at City University London και Fellow of the University of Oxford’s European Humanities Research Centre.

Ειδική μνεία γίνεται στην καταλυτική συνδρομή τών Cappella Romana, χάρη στην αφιλοκερδή προσφορά των οποίων υλοποιείται το πρόγραμμα.

Πάτρα, 19/5 – 20:00

Η συναυλία θα λάβει χώρα στον Ιερό Μητροπολιτικό Ναό Ευαγγελιστρίας με ελεύθερη είσοδο για το κοινό. Η εκδήλωση πραγματοποιείται σε συνεργασία με την Ιερά Μητρόπολη Πατρών, τη Λέσχη Φίλων Κλασσικής Μουσικής Πατρών, την Βυζαντινή – Παραδοσιακή Χορωδία «Θεόδωρος Φωκαεύς» η οποία θα συμμετέχει με σύντομο μουσικό πρόγραμμα και τη Στέγη Ελληνικών Χορωδιών.

Η συναυλία θα φιλοξενηθεί στο Αμφιθέατρο “Cotsen Hall” της Γενναδείου Βιβλιοθήκης, στην Αμερικανική Σχολή Κλασικών Σπουδών, σε συνεργασία με το Σύλλογο Φίλων της Γενναδείου Βιβλιοθήκης, με απώτερο σκοπό να υποστηρίξει το έργο ψηφιοποίησης εντύπων που φυλάσσονται εκεί. Θα ακολουθήσει δεξίωση για όλους τους ακροατές στους Κήπους της Γενναδείου Βιβλιοθήκης.

Στο DEREE – The American College of Greece, μέλη τών Cappella Romana θα πραγματοποιήσουν Master class – εργαστήριο για τη φωνητική μουσική σε φοιτητές του Κολλεγίου, του Τμήματος Μουσικών Σπουδών του Ε.Κ.Π.Α., σε σπουδαστές μουσικών σχολών και ωδείων. Οι φοιτητές θα συμμετέχουν χωρίς οικονομική επιβάρυνση.

Cappella Romana

Το 10μελές ανδρικό φωνητικό μουσικό σύνολο Cappella Romana, με έδρα το Seattle στη βορειοδυτική περιοχή των Η.Π.Α., συστάθηκε το 1991 από Αμερικανούς, Ελληνο-Αμερικανούς και Έλληνες από την Αθήνα, την Πάτρα και την Τήνο και υπηρετεί συστηματικά την έρευνα, μελέτη και παρουσίαση των μουσικών παραδόσεων της Χριστιανικής Ανατολής και της Δύσης, με έμφαση στην παλαιά – μεσαιωνική και τη σύγχρονη μουσική.

Η επωνυμία του, Cappella Romana, αναφέρεται στη μεσαιωνική ελληνική σύλληψη της ιδέας της Ρωμαϊκής Οικουμένης (χώρος που οικείται – κατοικείται), η οποία περιελάμβανε τη Ρώμη, τη Δυτική Ευρώπη καθώς και τη Βυζαντινή Αυτοκρατορία με έδρα την Κωνσταντινούπολη (Νέα Ρώμη) μαζί τη Σλαβική Κοινοπολιτεία. Κάθε πρόγραμμα τών Cappella Romana αντανακλά με πολλούς και διαφόρους τρόπους τη μουσική, πολιτισμική και πνευματική κληρονομιά αυτού του οικουμενικού οράματος

Η πρόσφατη μουσική έκδοσή τους με τον τίτλο “Mount Sinai: Frontier of Byzantium” περιλαμβάνει μουσικά μέλη από χειρόγραφα της Ιεράς Μονής Αγίας Αικατερίνης του Σινά, η οποία, στους 17 αιώνες συνεχούς λειτουργίας από την ίδρυσή της, αποτελεί το κέντρο συνάντησης και ειρηνικής συνύπαρξης των τριών μεγάλων θρησκειών: του Χριστιανισμού, του Μουσουλμανισμού και του Ιουδαϊσμού. Αμερικανική Σχολή Κλασσικών Σπουδών

Η Αμερικανική Σχολή Κλασικών Σπουδών στην Ελλάδα ιδρύθηκε το 1881 και θεωρείται σήμερα ένα από τα κορυφαία κέντρα επιστημονικής έρευνας και διδασκαλίας στον κόσμο, αφιερωμένο στη μελέτη κάθε όψης του ελληνικού πολιτισμού της αρχαιότητας, αλλά και της σύγχρονης εποχής. Αποστολή της είναι να προωθεί τη μελέτη της ελληνικής φιλολογίας, ιστορίας και αρχαιολογίας, καθώς και να πραγματοποιεί ανασκαφές και έρευνα, συμπεριλαμβανομένης της συντήρησης και αποκατάστασης μνημείων στην Ελλάδα.

Η Αμερικανική Σχολή προσφέρει μια μοναδική βάση για έρευνα στην Ελλάδα σε μεταπτυχιακούς φοιτητές και ερευνητές από περίπου 180 (εκατόν ογδόντα) συνεργαζόμενα κολέγια και πανεπιστήμια της Βόρειας Αμερικής.

Χιλιάδες μεταπτυχιακοί φοιτητές, πανεπιστημιακοί και αρχαιολόγοι από την Ελλάδα και την υπόλοιπη Ευρώπη χρησιμοποιούν κάθε χρόνο τις Βιβλιοθήκες της Σχολής για τις ερευνητικές τους ανάγκες, ενώ η Γεννάδειος Βιβλιοθήκη, μια από τις σημαντικότερες στον κόσμο, είναι προσβάσιμη στο ευρύ κοινό.

Οι ανασκαφές που χρηματοδοτούνται από τη Σχολή, οι δημοσιεύσεις, οι διαλέξεις και οι εκθέσεις που διοργανώνονται κάθε χρόνο βοηθούν στο στη γνώση όλων για το ελληνικό παρελθόν καθώς και στη διάδοση της γνώσης αυτής. (www.ascsa.edu.gr)

Γεννάδειος Βιβλιοθήκη

Η Γεννάδειος Βιβλιοθήκη της Αμερικανικής Σχολής Κλασικών Σπουδών στην Αθήνα στεγάζει στο ιστορικό κτήριό της μία πλούσια συλλογή βιβλίων και σπάνιων βιβλιοδεσιών, αρχείων, χειρογράφων και έργων τέχνης που αναδεικνύουν την πολιτιστική κληρονομιά της Ελλάδας από την αρχαιότητα έως σήμερα. Εμπλουτίζοντας διαρκώς τη συλλογή του Ιωάννη Γεννάδιου, που αριθμούσε 26.000 βιβλία το 1922, η Βιβλιοθήκη έχει ξεπεράσει τους 120.000 τόμους και περιοδικά.

Η κλασική γραμματεία εκπροσωπείται από εξαίρετες εκδόσεις έργων των Ομήρου, Θουκυδίδη, Ηροδότου και των τραγικών ποιητών. Σπάνιες εκδόσεις της Βίβλου και εκκλησιαστικών έργων φωτίζουν την ιστορία της Ορθοδοξίας και των θρησκειών γειτονικών λαών, ενώ μοναδικά χειρόγραφα και εικόνες αντανακλούν το βυζαντινό κόσμο. Παγκοσμίου φήμης είναι η γεωγραφική και περιηγητική συλλογή της με βιβλία, ημερολόγια περιηγητών και παλαιούς χάρτες. Η Βιβλιοθήκη κατέχει μνημειώδεις τόμους του 18ου και 19ου αιώνα, που απεικονίζουν τη χλωρίδα και την πανίδα της Ελλάδας και της ανατολικής Μεσογείου, καθώς επίσης παλαιές πόλεις και αρχαία μνημεία. Το τοπίο αποδίδουν, επίσης, οι υδατογραφίες του Edward Lear. Ξεχωριστή θέση έχουν η συλλογή αντικειμένων του Λόρδου Βύρωνα και τα ζωγραφικά έργα που απεικονίζουν τον Αγώνα της Ανεξαρτησίας, φιλοτεχνημένα για λογαριασμό του Μακρυγιάννη. Μαρτυρίες των Θεόδωρου Κολοκοτρώνη, Αλή Πασά και Samuel G. Howe καταγράφουν τα γεγονότα του ’21.Μεταξύ των Αρχείων, συγκαταλέγονται εκείνα του Ερρίκου Σλήμαν, της οικογένειας Δραγούμη, των Κ. Τσάτσου, Γ. Σεφέρη, Οδ. Ελύτη, Δ. Μητρόπουλου, Ηλ. Βενέζη, Στρ. Μυριβήλη, Β. Βασιλικού, Β. Ραπτόπουλου κ.ά..

Η Βιβλιοθήκη αποτελεί προσφιλή χώρο μελέτης για Έλληνες και ξένους ερευνητές βυζαντινών, οθωμανικών, βαλκανικών και νεοελληνικών σπουδών. Διαδραματίζει σημαντικό ρόλο στο ακαδημαϊκό πρόγραμμα της Αμερικανικής Σχολής, καθώς και στην ενημέρωση ενός ευρύτερου κοινού με ειδικές εκδηλώσεις και δημοσιεύσεις σε έντυπη ή ηλεκτρονική μορφή. Σύλλογος Φίλων Γενναδείου Βιβλιοθήκης

Ο Σύλλογος Φίλων Γενναδείου Βιβλιοθήκης είναι σωματείο μη κερδοσκοπικό, που ιδρύθηκε το 1983 για την προβολή του έργου και την οικονομική ενίσχυση του εθνικού και εκπαιδευτικού στόχου της Βιβλιοθήκης, την «Κιβωτό του Ελληνισμού», όπως την είχε χαρακτηρίσει ο Ιωάννης Γεννάδιος.

Οι σημαντικότερες εκδηλώσεις του Συλλόγου είναι η «Ημέρα Μνήμης Ιωάννου Γενναδίου», η οποία αναφέρεται στο έργο του Ι. Γενναδίου, Πρέσβη της Ελλάδος στο Λονδίνο, συλλέκτη και βιβλιόφιλου, και η «Ημέρα Ανθής Γενναδίου», κατά την οποία τιμάται η σύζυγός του Ανθή, Florence Samuel – Laing, κόρη Σκώτου φιλέλληνα, η οποία συνέδραμε στην ολοκλήρωση της Συλλογής και της δωρεάς της Βιβλιοθήκης προς την Αμερικανική Σχολή Κλασικών Σπουδών στην Αθήνα. Προς τιμήν της διεξάγεται ετήσια Βιβλιαγορά στους κήπους της Γενναδείου.

Οι Φίλοι προσφέρουν στη Γεννάδειο την ετήσια συνδρομή τους, έσοδα από την Βιβλιαγορά και άλλες εκδηλώσεις, δωρεές χρηματικές, παλαιές και νέες εκδόσεις βιβλίων και αρχειακό υλικό. Οργανώνουν διαλέξεις, επισκέψεις σε βιβλιοθήκες και αρχεία βιβλιοθηκών ή άλλων ιδρυμάτων, καθώς και επισκέψεις, ταξίδια και ξεναγήσεις σε ιστορικούς και αρχαιολογικούς χώρους της Ελλάδας και του εξωτερικού.

DEREE – The American College of Greece

Aνεξάρτητος, μη-κερδοσκοπικός εκπαιδευτικός οργανισμός που λειτουργεί στα πρότυπα του αμερικανικού συστήματος ανώτατης εκπαίδευσης. Το Κολλέγιο ιδρύθηκε το 1875 στη Σμύρνη και μεταφέρθηκε στην Ελλάδα το 1923 με την ενθάρρυνση του Ελευθερίου Βενιζέλου.

Το DEREE είναι αναγνωρισμένο και πιστοποιημένο από την New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC), τον σημαντικότερο και αρχαιότερο οργανισμό πιστοποίησης των Η.Π.Α. και έχει συνεργασία με το Open University του Ηνωμένου Βασιλείου για την ευρωπαϊκή πιστοποίηση των τίτλων του. Προσφέρει τίτλους Bachelor of Science και Bachelor of Arts σε 21 ειδικότητες και τίτλους Master σε 5 ειδικότητες καθώς και μια σειρά προγραμμάτων επαγγελματικής κατάρτισης και πιστοποίησης. To ALBA Graduate Business School at The American College of Greece προσφέρει μεταπτυχιακούς τίτλους σε ειδικότητες σχετικές με τη διοίκηση επιχειρήσεων.

Ιερός Ναός Ευαγγελιστρίας Πατρών

Ο Ναός θεμελιώθηκε το 1842 και εγκαινιάστηκε το 1846 από τον Μητροπολίτη Πατρών Γρηγόριο Γ΄ Δενδρινό. Κατέστη Μητροπολιτικός το 1856. Ανήκει στον αρχιτεκτονικό τύπο της τρίκλιτης κεραμοσκεπούς βασιλικής. Είναι τρισυπόστατος διότι σ’ αυτόν υπάρχουν καθηγιασμένα τρία θυσιαστήρια: α) του Ευαγγελισμού της Θεοτόκου, β) του Αγίου Νικολάου σε ανάμνηση του ομωνύμου παλαιού προχείρου Ναού του Μώλου και γ)

του Αγίου νεομάρτυρος Γεωργίου εν Ιωαννίνοις, λόγω του ότι γύρω από το Ναό κατοικούσαν πολλοί Ηπειρώτες έμποροι, οι οποίοι συνεισέφεραν για την ανοικοδόμησή του.

Το σχέδιο της οροφής του Ναού εκπόνησε ο περίφημος Γερμανός αρχιτέκτονας Έρνστ Τσίλλερ. Το ρολόι είναι προσφορά του Γερμανού βιομηχάνου στην Πάτρα Θεοδώρου Αμβουργέρ, ενώ οι τρείς καμπάνες του δεξιού κωδωνοστασίου ήρθαν στην Πάτρα το 1862 από την Ιταλία.

Ο άμβωνας με τη σφυρήλατη σιδερένια κλίμακα (αντικατέστησε κάποιον παλαιότερο) κατασκευάστηκε το 1918, δωρεά της οικογένειας Τριάντη. Ο δεσποτικός θρόνος φιλοτεχνήθηκε στην Αθήνα το 1916 από τον περίφημο ξυλογλυπτικό οίκο Μαγιάση, ενώ ο ίδιος οίκος κατασκεύασε τα δυο ξυλόγλυπτα προσκυνητάρια αριστερά (1925) και δεξιά (1926) στην είσοδο του Ναού. Η διπλή σειρά στασιδίων, σχεδιασμένη από τον Αθηναίο Αρχιτέκτονα Μαγιάση, κατασκευάστηκε το 1926 από το εργοστάσιο του Ευθ. Χασαποπούλου με την επίβλεψη των αειμνήστων Ορλάνδου και Παπαθεοδώρου. Η ωραία Πύλη και οι πλαϊνές θύρες κατασκευάστηκαν την πρώτη δεκαετία του Κ΄ αι. από τον Β. Μακρή και ιστορήθηκαν από τον Επαμ. Θωμόπουλο.

Ο Ναός διακοσμήθηκε με αγιογραφίες σπουδαίων καλλιτεχνών όπως οι Κ. Φανέλλης, Επαμ. Θωμόπουλος, Σπ. Χατζηγιαννόπουλος, Τ. Πριονάς, Διον. Καλλιβωκάς, Γ. Κορόζης, Κ. Λειβαδάς-Λιώτσης, Νικ. Δοξαράς και Δημ. Στελακάτος. Οι εικόνες του Τέμπλου κατασκευάστηκαν το 1853 ενώ η Πλατυτέρα (1893) και πιθανόν οι παραστάσεις των κλιτών από τον Ανδρέα Μανάλη.

Ο κεντρικός πολυέλεος (1894) και τα μανουάλια του Σολέα (1895) προέρχονται από το Ηνωμένο Βασίλειο ενώ οι υπόλοιποι πολυέλαιοι από την Οδησσό (1910). Σπουδαία κειμήλια του Ναού είναι ο ξυλόγλυπτος Επιτάφιος (1892) με το μοσχοβίτικο χρυσοκέντητο σώμα (1890) καθώς και το μεγάλο ασημένιο ρωσικό Ευαγγέλιο (1892).

Την περίοδο 1999-2001 ο Ναός παρέμεινε κλειστός λόγω της εκ θεμελίων ανακαινίσεως του.

Βυζαντινή – Παραδοσιακή Χορωδία «Θεόδωρος Φωκαεύς»

Ιδρύθηκε τον Σεπτέμβριο του 2005, χάρη στην πρωτοβουλία του ιατρού Γεωργίου Βέργου και του πρωτοψάλτη Χαράλαμπου Θεοτοκάτου. Η επωνυμία της αναφέρεται στο Θεόδωρο Παπαπαράσχου Φωκαέα, Πρωτοψάλτη, Δάσκαλο της Εκκλησιαστικής Μουσικής, πολυγραφότατο και εκδότη μουσικών βιβλίων.

Η Βυζαντινή – Παραδοσιακή Χορωδία «Θεόδωρος Φωκαεύς» έχει πραγματοποιήσει εμφανίσεις στην Ελλάδα και το εξωτερικό. Έχει τιμηθεί από το βασιλικό ζεύγος της Σερβίας στο Βελιγράδι το 2010 και από τήν Α.Θ.Π. τον Οικουμενικό Πατριάρχη στην Κωνσταντινούπολη το 2012. Η δισκογραφική παραγωγή της περιλαμβάνει μουσικούς ψηφιακούς δίσκους, εκ των οποίων ο αφιερωμένος στη μνήμη του Πρωτοκλήτου Αγίου Ανδρέα έχει διακριθεί από τη Γαλλική Ακαδημία Επιστημών το 2011. Λέσχη Φίλων Κλασσικής Μουσικής Πατρών

Ιδρύθηκε το 1981, από μια ομάδα μουσικοφίλων πατρινών με Πρόεδρο την γνωστή καθηγήτρια μουσικής, Γιώτα Σαραβάλου. Η πρώτη συναυλία της πραγματοποιήθηκε στις 15 Απριλίου 1981 με προσκεκλημένους, για να αναλάβουν το βάρος του καλλιτεχνικού προγράμματος, τον βιολονίστα Τάτση Αποστολίδη, τον τσελίστα Σωτήρη Ταχιάτη και τον πιανίστα Άρη Γαρουφαλή. Σκοπός του Συλλόγου είναι η ανάπτυξη της μουσικής κίνησης, η διοργάνωση συναυλιών, διαλέξεων και εκθέσεων με κύρια κατεύθυνση την κλασσική μουσική.

Από την ίδρυσή της, η Λέσχη Φίλων Κλασσικής Μουσικής, συνεργαζόμενη με Μορφωτικά Ιδρύματα Ξένων Πρεσβειών στην Ελλάδα, Κοινωφελή Πολιτιστικά Ιδρύματα, την Εθνική Λυρική Σκηνή και το Μέγαρο Μουσικής Αθηνών, διοργάνωσε περισσότερες από 400 συναυλίες στο Δημοτικό Θέατρο Πατρών «Απόλλων», στην Αίθουσα της Φιλαρμονικής Εταιρίας Πατρών «Κωνσταντίνος Κυδωνιάτης» και στο Συνεδριακό και Πολιτιστικό Κέντρο του Πανεπιστημίου Πατρών με τη συμμετοχή διεθνούς φήμης καλλιτεχνών και μουσικών συνόλων από την Ελλάδα και το εξωτερικό, και υπήρξε ο κύριος υποστηρικτής και συνεργάτης της Ορχήστρας του Δήμου Πατρέων από της συστάσεώς της.

Ανάμεσα στις εκδηλώσεις της ξεχωρίζουν η παρουσίαση σε πανελλήνια πρώτη της σερενάτας για τρεις φωνές «Άκις, Γαλάτεια και Πολύφημος» τού Γκέοργκ Φρίντριχ Χέντελ (2006) και η όπερα του Κλαούτνιο Μοντεβέρντι «Η Στέψη της Ποππαίας» στο Φεστιβάλ Όπερας Αρχαίας Κορίνθου (2008).

Μοναδικό σταθερό οικονομικό έσοδο της Λέσχης Φίλων Κλασσικής Μουσικής για την υλοποίηση των σκοπών της είναι η ετήσια συνδρομή των μελών του Συλλόγου.

Στέγη Ελληνικών Χορωδιών

Η Στέγη Ελληνικών Χορωδιών ιδρύθηκε το 2002. Είναι πολιτιστικός οργανισμός μη κερδοσκοπικού χαρακτήρα, ο οποίος συνενώνει πανελλαδικά, σε συλλογικό επίπεδο, τους φορείς που διατηρούν στους κόλπους τους χορωδιακά σχήματα ή ασχολούνται με τη χορωδιακή τέχνη, δραστηριότητα και έρευνα.

Κύριοι σκοποί της είναι η προαγωγή και καλλιέργεια της χορωδιακής μουσικής, η συμβολή στη διάδοση και προβολή του έργου και των δραστηριοτήτων των ελληνικών χορωδιών σε εθνική και διεθνή κλίμακα και ο σχεδιασμός, η οργάνωση και η λειτουργία εργαστηρίων, σεμιναρίων, εκδόσεων, συνεδρίων σχετικά με τη χορωδιακή θεωρία και τη πράξη. Ενισχύει, επιπλέον, το έργο των ελληνικών χορωδιών παρέχοντάς τους μουσικό υλικό για μελέτη.

Ως μέλος τής International Federation for Choral Music (IFCM) και τής European Choral Association – Europa Cantat, εκπροσωπεί τις ελληνικές χορωδίες-μέλη της σε διεθνείς συναντήσεις και συνέδρια σχετικά με χορωδιακά θέματα. Cappella Romana, the 10 members vocal music ensemble originating from Seattle in northern USA, will be in Patras (May, 19) and in Athens (May, 20) to give two performances of medieval Byzantine music based in handwritten codices from the Holy Monastery of Saint Catherine on Mount Sinai (13th – 15th centuries) and offer a Master class for university and college music students in the Greek capital.

The music ensemble has already performed the specific repertoire at the Smithsonian Institution (Washington, DC), at the J. Paul Getty Museum (LA) and at the Metropolitan Museum of Art (NY). Prior to their arrival in Greece they will perform in London (The Hellenic Center & Saint Bartholomew the Great – May, 14 & 15) and at Regensburg in Germany (May, 17).

Their artistic director, Alexander Lingas, is a Senior Lecturer in Music at the City University, London, and a Fellow of the University of Oxford’s European Humanities Research Centre.

A special thanking note has to be made for Cappella Romana’s catalytic contribution to the implementation of the project’s activities.

The concert will be held at the Holy Metropolitan Church of the Annunciation; the event is organized in collaboration with the Holy Diocese of Patras, the Club of Classical Music Friends in Patras, the Choir of Byzantine – Traditional Music “Theodoros Fokaeus”, who will participate with a short introductory music program, and the Hellenic Choirs Association (Steghi Ellinikon Chorodion). Entrance will be free of charge.

The concert will be held at the “Gotsen Hall” auditorium of the Gennadius Library at the American School of Classical Studies in collaboration with the Association of Friends of the Gennadius Library and will support the digitization works of rare printed material which are kept at the Library. Cappella Romana

Cappella Romana is a 10 members’ vocal male chamber music ensemble based in the Pacific Northwest of the United States of America and dedicated to combining passion with scholarship in its exploration of the musical traditions of the Christian East and West, with emphasis on early and contemporary music. Founded in 1991, with members of the US community and of Greek origins, Cappella Romana’s name refers to the medieval Greek concept of the Roman oikoumene (inhabited world), which embraced Rome and Western Europe, as well as the Byzantine Empire of Constantinople (“New Rome”) and its Slavic commonwealth. Each program in various ways reflects the musical, cultural and spiritual heritage of this ecumenical vision.

Their artistic director, Alexander Lingas, is a Senior Lecturer in Music at City University, London, and a Fellow of the University of Oxford’s European Humanities Research Centre.

Their recent music publication under the title “Mount Sinai: Frontier of Byzantium” includes pieces transcribed from manuscripts preserved at the Holy Monastery of Saint Catherine on Mount Sinai which, during the 17 centuries from its foundation, marks the center of peaceful coexistence and the crossroads of the three major religions: Christianity, Islam and Judaism. The American School of Classical Studies at Athens

Since 1881 the American School of Classical Studies at Athens (ASCSA), a private institution based in Kolonaki, has been committed to education, archaeological research, and to the general preservation of Greek cultural heritage. Through a vigorous publication program it disseminates information about history and archaeology both to the Greek public and to the international and Greek scholarly communities.

ASCSA serves multiple constituencies. It is a teaching institution that introduces graduate students from North American universities to the archaeological sites and monuments of Greece. Lectures in ASCSA’s Cotsen Hall are open to the general public and via the internet at www.ascsa.edu.gr. Its two libraries provide resources to scholars in Greece: the Blegen Library devoted to the study of Greece and Rome, the Gennadius Library among the greatest in the world for the study of Byzantine, Medieval, and modern Greece. ASCSA’s archives house the papers of Seferis, Elytis, Mitropoulos, the Dragoumis family, Heinrich Schliemann, Konstantinos Tsatsos, and many other notables.

ASCSA also sponsors archaeological explorations. Since 1896 its members have explored Ancient Corinth and since 1931 the Athenian Agora. Both projects represent permanent and valuable contributions to the Greek people and to the promotion of tourism. ASCSA has built museums and research centers at both sites, and is particularly proud of the Stoa Attalos, which its members reconstructed in the 1950s. The Gennadius Library

of the American School of Classical Studies at Athens

The Gennadius Library of the American School of Classical Studies at Athens is one of Greece’s treasures. Located in a historic building, the Library houses collection of books and rare bindings, archives, manuscripts, and works of art illuminating Hellenic culture from antiquity to modern times. Since 1922, when Joannes Gennadius offered his 26,000-volume collection to the American School, the library’s collections have grown to over 120,000 volumes and journals.

Classical civilization is represented by rare first editions of Homer, Thucydides, Herodotus, and the great tragedians. Rare Bibles and liturgical works record the history of the Orthodox Church and neighbouring faiths, while Byzantine culture is reflected in unique manuscripts and icons. The Library holds a world-famous collection of books and diaries written by travellers and explorers, as well as old maps. It also houses 18th and 19th century folio volumes recording the flora and fauna of Greece and the Eastern Mediterranean along with descriptions of cities and sites of past civilizations. The early modern landscape is preserved in watercolours by Edward Lear. The War of Independence is represented by Lord Byron’s memorabilia, paintings created for General Makriyiannis

and eyewitness accounts by Ali Pasha, Theodoros Kolokotronis, and Samuel G. Howe. Among the rapidly expanding Archives are the papers of Heinrich Schliemann, the Dragoumis family, Greek Nobel laureates George Seferis and Odysseus Elytis, musician Dimitri Mitropoulos, politician Constantinos Tsatsos, and writers Elias Venezis, Stratis Myrivillis, VasilisVasilikos, Vangelis Raftopoulos etc.

The Library is a favourite workplace and an invaluable resource for researchers worldwide in the fields of Byzantine, Ottoman, Balkan, and Modern Greek Studies. It plays an important part in the academic program of the American School and a leading role in educating a wider audience through public lectures, seminars, symposia, exhibitions, and publications in print and on the web. The Association of Friends of the Gennadius Library

The Association of Friends of the Gennadius Library is a non-profit association founded in 1983 with the aim of providing support to the Gennadius Library, characterized as the “Arc of Hellenism” from its founder Joannes Gennadius.

The main events organized by the Association of Friends of the Gennadius Library are the “The Day in Memory of Joannes Gennadius” which is celebrated with a lecture on the works and the collections of the founder, Joannes Gennadius, Greek Ambassador to Great Britain, with passion for books and the “Day of Florence / Anthi Gennadius” in memory of his wife Anthi, Florence Samuel Lang, daughter of a Scottish philhellene. It is celebrated with an annual Bookfair in the gardens of the Library with books donated by members of the Association of Friends, foundations and publishers.

The Association also pursues the educational aims of the Library’s founder by organizing lectures, visits to Libraries and Archives, trips and tours for its members around various institutions and archaeological sites in Greece and abroad.

The Friends of the Gennadius Library donate to the Library membership fees, money raised from the Bookfair and other social events, as well as, old and new publications and archives.

Holy Metropolitan Church of the Annunciation of Patras

The Church was founded in 1842 and inaugurated in 1846 by the Bishop of Patras Gregory III Dendrinos. It became a Metropolis in 1856. It belongs to the architectural type of three-aisled ceramic-tiled basilica. It is triune because it houses three sanctified altars: a) of the Annunciation of the Virgin, b) of Saint Nicholas in memory of the namesake old rough Church of the Jetty, c) of Saint George the Neomartyr in Ioannina, owing to the fact that around the Church lived many Epirot merchants, who contributed to its construction.

The design of the roof of the Church was created by the famous German architect Ernst Ziller. The clock is an offering by the German industrialist in Patras Theodor Hamburger, while the three bells of the right belfry came in Patras in 1862 from Italy.

The pulpit and its wrought iron stairs (that replaced the older one) was constructed in 1918, a donation by the Triantis family. The episcopal throne was made in Athens in 1916 by the famous woodcarving workshop of Mayiassis, while he himself carved the two wooden shrines left (1925) and right (1926) at the entrance of the church. The double row of pews, designed by the Athenian architect Mayiassis, was created in 1926 by the factory of Efth. Hasapopoulos under the supervision of the memorable Orlandos and Papatheodorou. The great Pyle and side gates were built in the first decade of the 20th c. by V. Makris and were recorded by the Epam. Thomopoulos.

The Church was decorated with hagiographies of great artists such as K. Fanelis, Epam. Thomopoulos, Sp. Chatzigiannopoulos, T. Prionas, Dion. Kalivokas, G. Korozis, K. Livadas-Liotsis, Nic. Doxaras and Dem. Stelakatos. The icons of the altar were constructed in 1853, while that of the Platytera (1893) and possibly the scenes on the aisles by Andreas Manalis.

The central chandelier (1894) and candelabra of Soleas (1895) originate in the United Kingdom, while the rest of the chandeliers from Odessa (1910). Great relics of the Church are the woodcut Epitaph (1892) with the Muscovite embroidered body (1890) as well as the large silver Russian Gospel (1892).

In the period 1999-2001 the Church remained closed due to its thorough renovation.

“Theodore Fokaeus” Byzantine – Traditional Choir

Founded in September 2005, thanks to the initiative of Dr. George Vergos and first cantor Charalambos Theotokatos. The name refers to Theodore Papaparaschos Fokaeus, First Cantor, Master of Church Music, prolific author and publisher of music books.

The “Theodore Fokaeus” Byzantine – Traditional Choir has made appearances in Greece and abroad. It has been honored by the Serbian royal couple in Belgrade in 2010 and by His All Holiness the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople in 2012. Its record production

includes music CDs, of which the one dedicated to the Protoklitos Saint Andrew has been distinguished by the French Academy of Sciences in 2011. (www.fokaeus.gr)

Club of Classical Music Friends of Patras

Founded in 1981 by a group of music lovers of Patras under the Presidency of the renowned music teacher, Yota Saravalou. The first concert was held on April 15, 1981 with invitees, in order to take the weight of the artistic program, violinist Tatsis Apostolides, cellist Sotiris Tachiatis and pianist Aris Garoufalis. The purpose of the Association is to develop the musical activity, organizing concerts, lectures and exhibitions with classical music as its main orientation.

Since its founding, the Club of Friends of Classical Music, working with Educational Institutions of Foreign Embassies in Greece, Public Benefit Cultural Institutions, the National Opera and the Megaron – The Athens Concert Hall, organized more than 400 concerts at the “Apollon” Municipal Theatre of Patras, the “Constantine Kydoniatis” Hall of the Philharmonic Society of Patras and the Conference and Cultural Center of the University of Patras involving internationally renowned artists and ensembles from Greece and abroad, and has been the main supporter and partner of the Orchestra of the Municipality of Patras since its establishment.

Among its events stand out the first Panhellenic presentation of the serenata for three voices “Acis, Galatea and Polyphemus” by George Frideric Handel (2006) and Claudio Monteverdi’s opera “The Coronation of Poppea” at the Opera Festival of Ancient Corinth (2008).

The only standing economic income of the Club of Friends of Classical Music for the materialization of its objectives is the annual membership subscritpion of the Association.

Hellenic Choirs Association

The Hellenic Choirs Association was founded in 2002. It is a cultural non-profit organization, which brings together nationwide, collectively, vectors that retain within their reaches choral patterns or are concerned with choral art, activity and research.

Its main purposes are the promotion and cultivation of choral music, the contribution to the dissemination and promotion of the work and activities of the Hellenic choirs in a national and international scale, and the design, organization and operation of workshops, seminars, publications, conferences in relation to choral theory and practice. Furthermore, it strengthens the work of the Hellenic choirs providing them with musical material for study.

As a member of the International Federation for Choral Music (IFCM) and the European Choral Association – Europa Cantat, it represents its Hellenic choirs-members at international meetings and conferences on choral subjects. In Greece it has organized thematic concerts, and has proceeded to release albums and music CDs with choral works. (www.stegi-chorus.gr)
