 Dear Mr.  Marketos:

I was just informed of your appointment as Honorary Chairman of the executive Committee of the Greek Section,   Nationalities Division of the National Democratic   Committee.

The post you  have been  appointed to is an important one, indeed, as it opens the avenues of new opportunities for you and the “National  Herald” to enhance the contributions of our fellow-Americans of Greek descent to our  common  effort  on  behalf  of our great Democratic Party.

Greece, birthplace of our spiritual values and democratic  institutions, has  furnished our country with citizens whose creative capacity,  zeal for perfection  and respect for law have molded them under  the   stimulus   of the American  spirit   of  free enterprise  and individual   initiative,  into  a  dynamic element  of  our society.

Indeed,  it  is becoming  increasingly evident  that by their  inherent qualities and great cultural legacy they have  won an enviable place in  various  fields  of human  endeavor   as  a  consequence   of  which  they   have been  able to make  significant contributions to the well-being of our Nation.

In the light of the foregoing it is  apparent that your appointment, in conjunction with your experience, knowledge and ability and the part your noted  publication has  played for  over forty-three years as  an   interpreter of the ideals and principles of the  Democratic  Party, assumes  a  singular  importance.

It is in this spirit that I welcome your appointment and extend to you my congratulations fully confident that through your leadership and   cooperation as part of the national structure of the Democratic Party, the great number of the Greek-Americans who belong to our ranks will amplify its message among your people and help carry further its mission on behalf of an even greater and stronger-America.

With every good wish, I am,

Sincerely yours,

Adlai Stevenson

Dr. Mr. Marketos

I am writing to ask your support and cooperation in urging all eligible citizens of voting age to register.

You are aware_, I am certain, that there are 30-40 million citizens in this country who cannot exercise their franchise. Often it is a case of lack of information as to where and when registration takes place. We are conducting an extensive drive in all areas to reach everyone with this essential information.

I know your readers would respond to editorials urging them to participate in this essential domestic process of casting a vote.

This is a crucial time when Communist propaganda throughout the world claims that democracy Is failing because often one-half of the citizens of this great country do not vote.  In the free countries of Europe^ the percentage of those voting far surpasses that in the United States.  In the countries behind the Iron Curtain people cannot exercise the privilege of the ballot. We must demonstrate to the entire world that the United States has confidence in its way of life by fully exercising our franchise.

I hope you will let me have your suggestions for stimulating new registrations.

Sincerely

John F. Kennedy
